Why give City of Watkinsville employees' bonuses for just doing their jobs?

Why does Watkinsville City Council find it necessary to pay Watkinsville employees a bonus for just doing what they are paid a salary in the first place to do?

Does Watkinsville City Council and City Manager Dickerson think money grows on trees for the residents, or do they just like to spend money because it’s not theirs? On December 16, 2020, Dickerson submitted a letter to Mayor Smith and City Council to consider a 2020 calendar year end bonuses.

With a $97,000 salary and benefits, Dickerson left blank the bonus behind her name. And I agree she differently doesn't need a bonus, but I also disagree that employees need a bonus just for doing their job which they are compensated for with a salary.

Some say it bolsters retention, helps recruitment efforts, is a motivational tool for productivity. If an employee thinks a bonus only helps keep them with the City, or would motivate their work ethics, might I make a suggestion? Find another job. If you can't have a productive work day without a bonus...

What the Hell, it's just Watkinsville residents' money. In 2019 they gave $9,900 bonus with $2,250 additional bonuses on top of the bonuses. So in 2020 it was $10,800 in bonuses. Giving a bonus yearly is like giving a one time yearly pay raise by way of a back door.

Councilwoman Christine Tucker wanted to include Dickerson in the bonuses. A $2,000 bonus sounds about right. Dan Matthews moved to approve and Marci Campbell seconded. Motion unanimously carried, again business as usual. City Council business as usual.

I see nothing wrong with awarding someone for going above and beyond their job requirement, or giving them a percentage of saving the City money. How about the City Council do what is right and return unused taxes back to its owners, taxpayers, instead of giving a handout just because it happens to be the end of the year. With this council I don't see that happening in my life time.
